Teaching
Students with Attention Deficit Disorder
Links to 40 Articles and Ebooks on Teaching Students with ADHD
While I coach adults with ADD, not children, those adults
often have children with Attention Deficit Disorder. ADD
is the number 2 inherited genetic condition after height
80%. Hint to teachers, if a child has ADHD it's important
the parents get screened for it too, if not for themselves
for
the benefit of their child. If mommy or daddy are in denial about their ADHD, their ADHD children will have worse outcomes at school and home, and it'll be harder for their teachers. Here's a quick Adult ADHD Screening test, and 10 ways to manage adult ADHD.
Here's a list of 40 practical articles
and Ebooks to help teachers of students with Attention Deficit
Disorder learn better, improve the whole classroom
environment, reduce the teacher's stress, and the ADHD student's
stress as well. As someone who used to be a teacher for 5
years, I prefer to focus on the practical vs. theoretical
articles.
Keep in mind that while there are some commonalities, all
students with Attention Deficit Disorder are unique. Some
have many problems in schools, some have few, some struggle
greatly and some do very well. I have ADHD and I made the dean's
honours list in University and had one of my essays published
(there was occasional struggle involved and lots of procrastination
and stress). It would have been a much easier road for me
if I were taught using some of these methods.
For
example, there's a Mensa
Special Interest Group on ADHD that has
530 members, and there's many adults with ADHD who
have PhD's and teach in place like Harvard.
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP)
estimates that all teachers have in their classrooms at
least one child with ADHD.
