Manuals and Workbooks for Starting and Running Support Groups

Grassroots Facilitation Training Workshop Manuals

from the Self Help Resource Association of BC These are detailed PDF manuals from the course I took freely available (for now at least) from their website. They are well written, consice and practical with example exercises. One of the authors (my instructor Kathleen Porter) has been running self help support groups for 40 years. Here are the manuals in the series:

Basic Skills (Level 1)

Communication and Assertiveness Skills (Level 2)

Facilitation Skills (Level 2)

Conflict Resolution and Collaborative Problem Solving Skills (Level 2)

Shared Leadership Workbook PDF

This workbook is a planning tool to help you decide, clarify and/or redefine your group’s shared leadership structures.

Self-Help 101 Workshop: Understanding Self-help and Starting a Peer Support Group PDF

This workshop covers:
What is a self-help support group?
How self-help approaches complement other forms of support.
Why people come to groups and how to motivate them to come to the group.
Steps for starting a group, including planning stages and holding your first meeting.
Stages of group development and why they are important.
Ideas for evaluation and maintaining momentum.

Starting/Running Support Groups

Has several pages on starting and running support groups including logistics, promotion, facilitating, what support groups can and can not do, potential problems planning the meeting etc. Very comprehensive.
